How do I increase the thickness of a font in CS6

I have read where it says highlight the layer and hit stroke but stroke is always grayed out. Maybe I'm only thinking I'm highlighting the layer and not really. I just don't get it

Help please.

Many thanks, Penni

Hi pennipeter,

Are you trying to apply the stroke option which is available in Layer Style panel?

Regards,

Sahil

You can tell when a layer is highlighted because it will have a gray tint, like this:

You can also tell by looking at the title bar that has the name of the file, and in parenthesis the name of the layer will be displayed.

The layer should also be visible (should have an eye icon next to it).

The Stroke command under the Edit menu will be grayed out but the Stroke layer style will be available.

A purist would be having a major anxiety attack at the idea of adding weight to a carefully designed font by stroking it.  That's not to say that we don't all do exactly that sometimes.  However, if you made the jump to Creative Cloud, you would have access to the TypeKit fonts, and lots of those fonts come in a wealth of different weights.   Filson Soft, for instance, has 16 different weights!
