How do I make layers independent?

I was watching a video on Character Animator, where the speaker was talking about how to set up moving limbs on a puppet. He said open the puppet image in Photoshop, and under Layers, there should be a "+" sign beside the left arm group name, and a "+" beside the right arm group name, which indicates that the limbs are independent.

I tried renaming the group and put a "+" in front of the group name, but that doesn't work.

I don't see anything under the drop-down Layers menu that would do what I want.

How do I make the arm groups independent?

Thanks!

This page shows you the layer structure for Photoshop and Illustrator.

Some groups get the + while in others the sublayers get + in the name.

Which video were you watching? The video I saw shows that you not only have to rename the layer with a + in Photoshop, but over in Character Animator you also have to enable Warp Independently for that same layer. Were both done?

Thanks for the quick response!

I opened Dr. Applegate in Character Animator, then right-clicked and selected Edit Original.

Dr. Applegate opened in Photoshop.

I can click the View icon to the left of each arm group and make each arm group visible/invisible. So I know they are separate layers. But the arms still did not move in Character Animator (it updates automatically from changes in PS).

That said, I just went back into CA, and now the arms are, in fact, movable.

Sorry, I don't know what happened.

Thanks again!

Sorry, I was watching this video on YouTube:

Limb IK (Adobe Character Animator Tutorial)

The statement is at 3:54. I asked Okay Samurai how to do it, and he responded and just repeated himself. "You can add a + in the PSD or AI file..."  The question I asked was how to do exactly that.
