How do i recreate this

so a while ago i asked a friend to edit an image for me(image 2), he used photoshop and made me this(image 1). I lost the chat messages between us, how do i recreate this effect? what did he do to make it? Any help is appreciated.

Could be as simple as creating a color-based selection from the black outlines and using it as a mask on a another layer...
