How to add Background to a Text in Photoshop?

Community Beginner ,

Hello everyone,

I am looking for an efficient way to add background to a text in Photoshop (25.2) - basically, to put the text in a box for better contrast and consistency. Example:

expected result text background.PNG

My current workflow is to write the text, then add a predefined black rectangle on a separate layer right beneath the text and adjust it's size manually. This causes manual work (obviously) and little inconsistencies.

Is there a more efficient or convenient way to get the same result?

Thanks!

You've found the best way to do this if you are going to use Photoshop.

I guess this is it then, I feel honored but dissatisfied. 🙂

Thanks for your response!

Illustrator and InDesign can auto-size the frame, but Photoshop does not have nearly the same text capabilites. It shines for editin images though!

In Photoshop, I start by selecting both layers and aligning Center / Middle, then tweaking the text so it looks right, then linking (or grouping) the layers  so they move together.

If you add text like this often, then you could enter your text, make the background, make your adjustments, and convert these two layers into a Smart Object. Then edit the text in the Smart Object for the next time you need it or make a new Smart Object via copy from it and edit the text in there.
