How to Add Gradient to Image Layer?

Hello,I hope I'm posting in the right place. I have a question.I start by creating a new file with a white background. Then, I open a color image. I select part of this image and move it to the white background. After that, I resize the moved image.My issue comes when I try to add a gradient to this image layer. The gradient ends up covering the whole canvas, which I don't want.How can I apply effects to just the image layer? I'd like the white background to remain untouched, like a frame around the image.Thank you.

To apply a gradient overlay to an image, you can either use the Layer > Layer Style menu and select Gradient Overlay, or create a new gradient layer above the image and clip it to the image layer. To clip the gradient layer, click on the three horizontal lines icon in the top right corner of the Layers panel and choose Create Clipping Mask, or use the keyboard shortcut Alt/Opt + Ctrl/Cmd + G.
