How to automatically align brightness of layers?

I took 43 close-up photos of different portions of a painting an used the "Align Layers" function to align those close-up photos to give me a high-re image of the painting. The aligning worked great and the result can be seen here:

As you can see, the close-up photos all have different brightness. Is there a way to automatically align brightness, so that I get one image without the jumps in brightness between different areas?
