How to change background contents after artwork is already created

Question

When you open a new document, Photoshop automatically prompts you to choose dimensions and background contents (color) before you start. But what if I decide that I want to change the background color after I already created the artwork? I've tried unlocking layer 0 and changing the color but it covers up the artwork I created and completely defeats the purpose. I solely want to change background color and leave the words and design the same. Please help, I feel like this should be so simple but I am struggling to find the solution.

You should be creating your artwork on separate layers, that way changing the lowest layer in the stack (which should have the background colour only) does not cover up anything.

However, if you have already put your artwork and background on a single layer then you will need to make a selection of the background areas and then change the colour of the selected areas.
