How do I change the default app for .psd and .jpg files back to the public Photoshop? I know how to assign this in the settings and have done it in settings several times. It still defaults to the beta when I double click to open a file. I do NOT want the beta version to be the default to open a document, and I do not want to have to open Photoshop first and then go file.open every single time I want to use it. If there is not answer for this, I will uninstall beta - as much fun as generative fill is, it is not that important to me to have it. I do have the newest versions of both installed.
Also, in Windows, is there any way to have both the public and beta versions open at the same time?
Thanks,
Marcy
The last installer activity will always take over file associations.
Normally you want to follow strict version order. The beta disrupts chronology a bit - they're both version 24.
You should probably be fine reinstalling the public version, and it should then take over file associations. When the time comes to uninstall, start with the one holding file associations, and then work backwards. Then reinstall whatever you want to keep.
Having a beta installed is always a bit risky, and the ri

Point made, I respect that. Let me start by offering apologies. Sorry if I come across as a pushy or entitled. It is not what I want to be and never ever what I want to become.
Why did I post in this thread, even though the answer you provided was about to be accepted? It's my philosophy that, if some product I proudly use or would like to try out, and I see something that can be improved (happens with any Adobe product, Figma, Microsoft Outlook, Firefox, you name it..) I want to help making it better. That is why I post on these forums. And who knows, maybe someone is reading on my feedback. It's always well-intended and I try to remain constructive. Beta or Public version. If I don't like something and I want it to be fixed, it's my own philosophy that I try to help by entering this community and adding my own feedback.
My last reply was petty, I have to admit. But the timing of the accepted answer provoked a little emotion on my end. Just as I added my idea, the very suggestion that I disliked got accepted. Having said that: I should have known better. Apologies.

IT guy here. Users in my office are having the same problem.
Photoshop is the beta software, not Creative Cloud.
Why would you mess up with the file associations? Why would you make a beta version the default?
This can be solved really easily by adding an option to set a default version or by skiping the file association when installing beta versions.
Adobe seems to be commited to do everything agains common sense, the forum is plaged with examples, this topic and the replies are just one of them. It's as if every Adobe user is so used to this that is the norm now.

@FacundAg319160726e47 I think this is more Windows than Photoshop.
The last installed version will always take the file associations in Windows. That has nothing to do with which version; just the last installed. You can install an old version on top of the current, and that old version will then become the default. This is just how Windows works.
So the question is whether the CC installer has any way to override that. I suspect not, because this has been a problem forever with having multiple versions installed. As long as you follow version order in and out, there are no problems.
But two things throw a wrench in the machine. One is having parallell versions like beta and production. That can be solved by reinstalling the one you want to have the file associations. The other is what happens when you uninstall old versions with a new one still in place. That tends to mess up file assiociations to the point where, worst case, you have to edit the Windows registry.

I think Adobe's answer to this Windows spec is use Bridge.
In Bridge, you can set the default version in "File Type Associations", and you can specify the version to open by right-clicking the mouse.

Does that work with switching associations between beta and production? In other words - does that override the Windows setting? Does it work with "Edit In" from Lightroom? From Windows Explorer?
I'd really like to know - I don't have the beta installed, so I can't test myself.

I only use Mac, so I don't know how it will work on Windows, but on Mac, the setting in Bridge is only useful when opening from Bridge, and it doesn't change the association on macOS.
Maybe, but I don't think I will change the Explorer association.

This is an OS issue, not an Adobe issue. When you install a different version of an application, the last one installed takes over the associations. It's also true of different applications that use the same extension. The last one installed takes over the associations. Try installing Adobe Acrobat Reader, then install another PDF reader (or just imagine it.)
As to addressing us as "you", no one who has answered so far in this is Adobe staff. They have an Adobe badge and the words "Adobe Employee" on their avatar. Those of us with "Community Expert" badges are volunteers who do not work for Adobe.

Every installer asks if you want file association. At least any respectable installer.
This is an Adobe problem. Windows will associate files only if you ask the SO to do it.
And I didn't mean Adobe staff.

Adding to my previous reply (I can't seem to edit it), for the sake of not polluting this thread with rumors or assumptions: anything I suggest is mostly conceptual. I am not affiliated with Adobe, nor do I work on the Photoshop team. Take the concrete examples of my suggestions with a grain of salt.

Control-click or Right-click on the file and choose “Get Info” to view file information. Here, you'll find the option “Open with”. You can click on it and select the app or software that you want to use for opening the specific file. To change the setting for all files using the same format, click on “Change All”.

Oh gosh finally! If you right click and select open with and apply to all it doesn't work. But going through get info does. Life saver! Seems like an OS issue I guess.

Hey Marcy,
To switch back to the public Photoshop as the default app for .psd and .jpg files, try right-clicking a file, selecting "Open With," choosing the public Photoshop, and marking it as the default.
As for running both versions simultaneously, Photoshop doesn't natively support it. You might explore virtual environments, but they could be complex.
If the beta's not crucial, uninstalling it could be a solution.

As I said in my original post, I've tried this over and over and it won't work. Uninstalling the beta version and then reinstalling it every time I want to work on it is not a good option either. I wish Adobe would just fix this already.

Not really helpful for the OP, but it astounds me how difficult this on Windows OS. On Mac OS it's as simple as doing Get Info on a file type, and changing it from beta to release version, and clicking a box "change all." One would think Adobe could add a user option during install rather than this crazy "last installed becomes default" thing. Hmm.

The beta version is for testing and giving feedback to the Photoshop team so they can find issues before adding features to the released version. If you are no longer interested in giving feedback you can uninstall using the Creative Cloud app. Details here:
