how to change the background colour without darkening it using Multiply?

I'm new to Photoshop and have been working on changing the background colour of some product photos.

As I can tell, the quickest way to do this is to use the object selection tool > Inverse > Solid colour > type in the hex code > choose Multiply in blending mode.

The photos turn out perfect with the shadow, but the problem is that it darkens the background colour. I need it to be exactly like the colour of the hex code since it matches the website's colour.

I tried the normal settings in blending mode, but it erased my shadows. Is there any way to fix this?

You don’t seem to comprehend the Blend Mode »Multiply« – it can only 

• darken or 

• have no effect (white set to »Multipy« for example). 

 

And your approach seems »imprudent« to me.

I would recommend that you use the selection as a Layer Mask for the object and work beneath that. 

This is technically not necessary but in my experience it can help to emulate a »real-world« stacking of elements to keep track of elements. 

 

If the background should have a specific colour you may also have to mask the element’s shadow.
