How to create a pattern tile so edges line up

Help! This has been bugging me for hours! I'm trying to create a repeated pattern but because it is not in a straight line it goes over the edges. How do I make the left edge line up with the right edge to create tiles that when put together make a seamless pattern.

Create a vertically repetitious element and arrange instances of it horizontally to the necessary width.

If you are not willing to actually show the image you are talking about this seems pretty much pointless.
