how to cut out shapes of transparent image?

If you have editable text and want to use a quick method like the Paint Bucket, you have two options shown in the GIF below:

• Create a selection using transparency by Ctrl-clicking on the text layer, inverting it, and then using the Paint Bucket on a separate layer.
• Convert the text layer to a Smart Object, which will keep the text editable, then create a layer below the Smart Object and use the Paint Bucket.

(This part is typographical nerdiness, but an area enclosed within a type character is called a “counter.”) Do you want the counters to be literally Photoshop shapes, as in Photoshop shape layers? Or do you just want them filled with white?

Depending on what you want, here are three possible ways:

As a simple fill of white pixels on the same layer:

1. Use the Magic Wand tool to select the counters. 

2. Use the Paint Bucket tool (or the command Edit > Fill) to fill the selected pixels with white. 

As a fill of white pixels on a separate layer:

Same as above, except create a new empty layer before applying a fill color.

This time I filled from the Contextual Task Bar. 

Now that I think about it…To cover any tiny gaps that might appear between the character and white vector shape layer, after making the selection you might consider first expanding the selection slightly (Select > Modify > Expand) by a pixel or two, then stack the new layer behind the character.

As vector shapes on a separate layer:

Same as above, but instead of applying a fill color, do this:

1. In the Paths panel, create a work path from the selection. 

2. Create a new Solid Color fill layer, and set it to white.

It would be an advantage if the images were available as vectors. You can convert fonts into shapes and trace the first image. Then you can assign a fill and a stroke in the desired width to the shapes (as in Illustrator).

If you want to work pixel-based, you can make selections and fill these selections with the desired colour. Ideally, this should be done on a separate layer below the current one.
