Question

How to export a layer in "screen" mode as a PNG

Hey everyone,

I want to export a layer which is in "screen' mode. I know these are only visible in Photoshop and just exporting it as a PNG will make the screened area black. Is there a workaround to be able to export the individual layer inclusive of the 'screen' mode? Thanks

In short: a blend mode is the interaction between two layers. A sigle layer cannot have a blend mode in itself.

Long and short: No. If you want transparency, you have to create real transparency and the blending must be merged against the layer(s) below it.

It's not possible, unless you flatten the layers that the layer with the screen mode affects or make a stamped copy of all the layers.

So in theory could I mask out the same area that the screen mode captures. Essentially the these are overlays (rain / snow etc) which just have a black background. Wondering if I can cleanly remove the black background similar to what screen manages to do.

Several years ago, I had a conversation with Stephen Nielson, the product manager of PS, about a feature that would capture a layer's blend mode to a single layer. He seemed very intrigued, but nothing has happened.
