Question

How to fix my brushes retaining the size of a previously used brush

Even when I recreate the brush and have 'Capture Brush Size in Preset' unticked, I still get the same issue of the brush size being linked between different brushes. I have even made my own presents with 'Capture Brush Size in Present' unticked but somehow the size still links to other brushes. I have checked that all other brushes have this option unticked. I am pulling my hair out over this. Its a small but extremely inconvienient issue and any help would be so appreciated.

No worries, I am not explaining well. I am speaking of the size that the brush takes after pressing the little curved arrow next to the brush size slider, where it says 'restore to original size' when you hover over it. So this refers to the original size the preset was when the brush was created?

In Clip Studio Paint, I am able to keep a particular brush size confined to one brush, and every time I clicked on that particular brush, it would be at the same size that I last used it. I am guessing this cant be done in Photoshop, keeping sizes individual to each brush?

I am trying to download brushes, clone a brush I like in the size I would like, and modify it. It just seems impossible for me to do so. And I find it extremely frustrating having to change the brush size of a brush every time I use it and scale it down or up, when I would rather it simply remembered what size I previously used the brush at. Perhaps I am missing the way things are in Clip Studio Paint.

Thank you for listening and speaking to me about my issues. I have tried looking all over on YouTube for tutorials and articles, but I am struggling to understand how brush sizing and memory works between brushes.

Sorry for being dense, but what is exactly the "original size" that you'd like to return to in the first paragraph?

The saved size is the size it had at creation time (and I mean when creating a brush preset from the image with Edit>Define Brush Preset.

Again, using recent brushes lets you retrieve a previously used brush at a modified size.

Why are you creating brushes from other ones? There might be an alternative workflow for you to use.

Thank you for explaining! I now realise that if I create a preset on my own canvas, I need to scale it down for it to retain a certain size when switching brushes. The brush restores to the blue highlight when I switch back to it and I do not have the option of 'restore to original size', which is what I would like.

However, I now have another issue of the same sort. I cant understand why when I create a new brush from another one in my libary, and I set the preset to correspond with my current brush size and I have the 'Capture Brush Size in Present' unticked - why it still allows me to 'restore to original size' when I saved the new brush to my current brush size. I also have the issue with it not retaining the size I made it to be when I duplicated it from another brush; when I switch to another brush, then switch back, it has the size of the previous brush.

I know this is really complicated, even if I cant find a solution I really appreciate your time 🙂

Sorry, here I come with yet another question: how are you changing brushes? my experience is that if I click on a brush preset, I get the brush at the size setting it was saved to. If I use brush one at 100 and change its size to 50, the highlight in the brushes panel turns brown;  if I click on the preset again, or if I click on another preset, then on the first preset, I return to brush one with 100 as the size.

BUT if I paint with brush one at 50 px, the recent brushes settings remembers it, and I can switch to another preset, then to that brush 1 at 50 again.

I hope this helps, but I'm no Kyle Webster 🙂

Hi!

Yes no worries. The issue is that everytime I create a brush preset, its size remains changeable. Switching to another brush then back to my preset imprints the size of the previous brush onto my preset brush. I can't establish a locked size for my presets I create.

Thank you for answering.

Hi, could you elaborate, is the issue that the brush presets you create retain a previous size, or that the brush size sticks when changing brushes?

Did you check if there is no lock engaged in the brushes settings panel?

The first step I'd do would be to right-click on the brush icon in the Option Bar, and select Reset Tool.

You can also reset the brush settings panel locks via its local menu.
