How to get transparent distressed text

I am trying to distress my text using a brush, however the distressed areas turn into the same colour as the outline. How can I get it to be transparent whilst keeping the outline?

Are you using a Layer Mask?

Thanks for the reply! Yes I have a layer mask, I have updated my original post with a link to my assets so you can see the clip. If I remove the outline, the distressed areas become transparent.

Nut sure if this is the effect you are after but have you tried putting the Type Layer in a Group and applying the Layer Mask to the Group?
