hello new to PS
So I'm making a tileset texture where each tile needs to be seamless as well as interface with other tiles around them. I want to separate each segment in a way where I can see how it interfaces with the rest of the tileset as well as itself (via pattern preview) at the same time.

The nearest I've gotten are artboards but it doesn't let me use pattern preview.

thanks for any help in advance

May be missing your objective. The easy remedy on the surface is to use the Paint Bucket tool and set the Option Bar drop down to pattern. If you are using multiple Art Boards you can rotate or move the tiles.

I'm glad that pattern preview works with smart objects of a different size than the base canvas. This alone probably saved me 100s of hours cross-referencing artwork for the week. I assumed Smart objects worked differently from working with other art/image base software.

Glad it was helpful.  Yes, Smart Objects are IMO one of the most useful features in Photoshop.  I use them whenever possible.
