How to make a curved line?

Can someone give a simple explanation on how to make a curved line with the pen tool?

Whenever I make a line, and then add a curve point, and drag it to where I want it to be, it fills in the negative space instead of making the curved line.

What am I doing wrong?

When drawing with the Pen tool, there are 3 choices. Shape creates a new shape layer and fills the area with the current Foreground color, Path does not create a new layer, does not fill with any color. Pixels does not create a new layer, fills with the Foreground color and does not create a path.

Which one to chose depends on what you want to achieve. I may be misunderstanding, but it sounds like you might want the Path choice.
