How to make backgrounds transparent

I am going to make animations with characters like Mario and such and use Adobe Animate. I used to do this with macromedia flash 8 and I would use g.i.m.p to make the background color transparent. To my knowledge photoshop can do this. I dont know much about it. When I press NEW i can see the background contents can be set to transparent but when I put in a sprite sheet its still white. What exactly do I do?

To answer your question directly, make your image on a new layer, and turn off the background layer so you can see the checkerboard background.  Save out to GIF or PNG.

But I am wondering if you might be better asking in the Animate forum?

I got it to work. I have to go to Layer, then smart object, and then rasterize. Then I can delete the white background. Do I export to use it for Animate or do I save?
