How to Position Items to Appear Extending Out of a Cart

New Here ,
Jan 27, 2025 Jan 27, 2025

Hi everyone,

I want to create a design similar to the one in this image (attached), where items like bags, shoes, and shirts are positioned inside the shopping cart but appear to extend slightly outside its boundaries.

I’m using Photoshop

, but I’m not sure how to achieve this effect.

Thank you for your help!

Each of the items would need the background removed. To remove the background, select their layer (if one of them is the Background layer, click the lock icon first to unlock it), go to the Quick Actions section of the Properties panel (Window > Properties and make sure the panel is expanded far enough down to see the options), and click Remove Background.

Then you can use Free Transform (Edit > Free Transform...) to scale and rotate each item.

Hi claualbany

The simplest way to create this design would be to follow these steps.

  1. Set Up the Canvas: Open Photoshop and create a new document with a white background. Import your shopping cart image and place it on a new layer.
  2. Add the Items: Import the images of the items you want to place in the cart (e.g., bags, shirts, shoes). Each item should be on a separate layer. Deepetch each image to remove their backgrounds.
  3. Position Items in the Cart: Use the Move Tool (V) to drag and position the items so they appear inside the cart. Use Ctrl + T (Command + T on Mac) to resize and rotate the items to match the perspective of the cart.
  4. Mask for Overlapping Effect: Select the cart layer and use the Quick Selection Tool (W) or Pen Tool (P) to create a selection of the shopping cart's boundaries. Go to the layer of the item that should extend outside the cart. Add a Layer Mask by clicking the mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. On the mask, paint with black (using the Brush Tool) to hide parts of the item behind the cart. Paint with white to reveal parts of the item that extend beyond the cart.
  5. Add Shadows for Realism: Create a new layer below each item layer. Use a soft brush with a low opacity to paint shadows beneath the items inside the cart. Adjust the opacity and blur (using Gaussian Blur) of the shadow to match the lighting in your composition.
  6. Enhance the Design: Add text above the cart using the Text Tool (T) to replicate the "wish (cart) list" and "Back to school" phrases. Experiment with fonts and alignment to match the original style.
  7. Final Touches: Adjust colors and brightness of the items using Adjustment Layers (e.g., Hue/Saturation or Levels) to ensure they blend well together.
  8. Save the file as a PSD for future edits and export it as a JPEG or PNG for sharing.

You need to split and mask the front and the back of the trolley (as viewed) on separate layers. Then your objects can be behind the front wire basket, but in front of the back section. The pen tool is good for such masking.

Here is an example. The trolley and rest of the scene are from a 3D render on the background layer.
The bottles are on the next layer

The shopping cart front (as viewed) is a masked version of the background layer (everything masked out except the wire basket sides nearest the viewer. This was done within a smart object, and placed as a 3rd layer placed above the bottles in the layer stack.
