Question

How to quickly put an image inside a group.

I have a psd file with everything I want inside their own groups, but when I try to add an image to the document the layer is always outside of the group, so I have to manually drag it down to inside the group. Is there a way to make the layer already start inside the group? Or a shortcut to add the image to the group I want?

Shortcut to move layer one position down or up in Layer stack is Ctrl/Cmd + [ or ]. It may come handy when moving layers (or layer groups). There are and shortcuts to target layers down or up from currently selected Alt/Opt + [ or ] and finally you can target top most or bottom most layer using Alt/Opt + . (period) or , (semicolon).

Curious, how would Photoshop know which group you want?

You need to click on the group you want to place the layer before you add the the new layer. I think personally, just clicking and dragging the file into the group you want it in, I think it is the faster way. But if you have a ton of groups it might be easier to click on the group you want the layer to be added.

@Jumpenjax – I know that, I'm asking @HeyoThere how Photoshop would "know this" (ESP?) without selecting the group in the first place to signify which set to add the layer to!

Yes, be sure you are in the group you want, click on a layer in the group. Then you make the new layer and it will put it in that group. So pretty much it is which way is easiest for you, the way you do it now or the way I explained above.

Hope this helps.
