How to re-create this print

Does anyone know how I can re-create something similar to this?  New York City, New York, USA Canvas Art by Michael Tompsett | iCanvas

I'm not sure if I should be using photoshop or another adobe application.

Also, I plan on printing it on a large canvas so that I can hang in my living room.

Thanks in advance.

    That's quite a straightforward effect.

Find a suitable Cityscape silhouette and knock out the whites with the Quick Select tool

Add some white canvas to give yourself room to work and expand

Copy the Cityscape layer > move it to below the original layer, and Free Transform invert and perspective.

Open a Levels layer and clip it to the cityscape copy (red highlight) and move the black output slider to the right to fade the layer

The easiest way forward from here would be to crop tightly to the left and right, but leave some head space above and below.  You can then add a known canvas size — lets say 200 pixels (relative).  You'll see why in the next step.

Now go View > New Guide Layout  Using the values below sets you up to select the three panels (Triptych) 100 pixels being half of the 200 pixels we added overall.

    Y

You need to either group the two cityscape layers and the levels layer, or make them a Smart Object.

With the guides turned on, make three selections (they will snap to the guides).  Use the Shift key to add to the first selection.

Now add a layer mask to the cityscape group/smart object

I'm going to leave out the 3D effect for now, because I have to go out, but if you are OK this far, I'll move this thread to the Photoshop forum and one of the lads over there can finish that aspect for you.

OK add a new layer, and clip it to the Cityscape layer.  (Alt click the intersection of the two layers)  I've called this layer splatter.  In fact I have added two of them for good measure

There are heaps of splatter brush sets out there.  I try to keep my brush sets to 100, and have several splatter sets

But you can use a standard hard round brush

    Increase spacing to about 100%

    Set size jitter to 100%

Scatter jitter to 1000% and check Both Axes

In Color Dynamics set foreground/background jitter to 100% and Hue jitter to 100%

Make the foreground and background colours something bright  (red & yellow ?)

Check Apply per Tip (or it will only change colour when you lift the brush)

    And go crazy

Add a drop shadow to the cityscape layer, smear the coloured paint, blur liquify etc.

Note you will need to give the cityscape panels a white background to add a drop shadow, but I have to go...  right now :-(

Once you do decide which program to use, you will need to ask your process questions in that forum

    Hi tetsusaigadrgn,

Yes, this kind of image could be created in Photoshop, using a silhouette of a city, and a variety of water color textures and spatter images. The silhouette image would become the layer mask for some of the textures, and then the spatters could be laid in over the top.

the key concepts you'd want to study to create something like this are Layers, and Masking.

Thanks for all the replies. Would anyone know if there is a tutorial on YouTube that can teach me something close to achieving this?  Thanks.

I was just playing around, and I think I'll make a video to show how I did this. Ingredients:

    1. Cityscape vector

    2. One big watercolor blob

    3. Three separate paint spatter images in black & white

Mix together, add layer masks and a few layer effects, a motion blur for the reflection, and voila!

[Edit: looking at the original post linked image, I was too heavy with the spatters, but that's easily fixed when I make the video...]

I'll post the link to the video in a day or two once I've had a chance to create it.
