How to remove background in photoshop?

When creating a photoshop file I put the background color to gray. Now I'd like to remove the backgroung color and have it transparent, but the background isn't as a layer.  So how do I change or remove the artboards bg color?

Hi

You could make a selection of the gray background then hit Ctrl/CMD + Shift + I to invert the selection and Ctrl/CMD + J to jump the selection to it's own layer.

If that doesn't help can you post a screenshot
