How to replicate this design ?

Hey,

I want to make design like one of the three below.

As you can see each one of the three has: blurred background, player's photo pop out from the shape and another layer as a part of the background (maybe with the grey color !).

Any tips and advices ?

There's a wee bit to it, so I'll give you a step by step.

Find a suitable image with good close up action, and open in PS.  The image you use is is important so chose with care, and plan ahead.

Copy the background layer, and in the Properties panel click on Remove Baclground.  This will isolate the player and possibly the ball with a layer mask.

Select the background layer (I actually made it a normal layer — just click on the padlock icon)

Use Free Transform (Ctrl T) to make it larger — min

It seems the same photo is used twice. Duplicate original photo and extract player.

Enlarge below original photo, clip it to rectangular shape, for example and blur a bit original photo as necessary.

Select the background layer (I actually made it a normal layer — just click on the padlock icon)

Use Free Transform (Ctrl T) to make it larger — mine looks about 300% but you deside.

Make the enlarged background layer a Smart Object by right clicking the layer.

Blur the background layer — I used Gaussian Blur value 10.0

If you look at my screen shot, you can see I used a low opacity soft brush in the mask to reduce the blur of the head.  This is entirely non destructive as you can control things with the mask.

I didn't like the look of the background, so I used a curves adjustment layer, with the settings you can see in my screen shot.

The ball was still visible in the background layer, and was a distraction, si I removed it with the Remove Tool.

BTW  I went with Women's Soccer as their World Cup is about to start in New Zealand where I live.

Thanks for you help.

But what about making the photo pop out from a shape with what you mentionned  ?

Make Blured Background player layer smaller, shrink it down, better option then enlarging Isolated foreground player. Recommended way is to convert Blured Background player to Smart Object layer before shrinking it down.

Select the blurred background layer, and use the Rectangle Marquee tool to select the area that will stay inside the image bounds.  Note: you can hold down the Space bar to reposition the selection to fine tune size and position.

Now simply click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel

If you want to do that background thing, select the Gradient tool (and this is a good time to use the New Gradient tool) and select Radiall Gradient.  Drag out the gradient, and use the control (my red highlight) to adjust the transition.  This is a big advantage over the Classic Gradient tool

You could take it a stelp further using a layer mask on the gradient layer.  Your image. You decide.
