Question

How to save smaller layered Photoshop files without compromising quality

Hi there. I am a professional illustrator compiling tradtional scanned artwork together in Photoshop. My files are very large; 350dpi for print, lots of folders, multi-layered using a lot of masks and overlays.

The problem I have is file size.

I saw an option to save ZIP (slow saves, smaller files) rather than the usual RLE (fast saves, bigger files) - just wanted to make sure that doing the ZIP option won't compromise any end result pixel quality as my work is for publishing in a book. Thank-you.

ZIP utilizes lossless compression so the images do not degenerate by it.

But you might want to pass on profiled, flattened tif or psd files to the printer anyway (while naturally keeping the layered images yourself).

Thank you so much, this is the assurance I needed before I saved over a years worth of complex illustrations in this way. Such a relief to have an easy downsize option. Yes, the printer will get flattened tif files. Thanks again 🙏

I think I may have posted the wrong link, though … quote from

»ZIP is an archive file format that supports lossless data compression. «
