I am new to photoshop and basically have no idea what I'm doing, but I am hoping that someone out there can explain to me (in step to step detail) how to thicken the lines of a scanned image. The image is a star shape in black outline and I need to widen the outline......

If it’s pure line-art you could try Filter – Other – Minimum.

    You’re welcome.

Of course they are other, albeit more complicated methods which may

    offer other advantages.

    For example one could

    • load the image as a Selection (by alt-clicking on the composite

    channel in the Channels Panel)

    • invert the Selection (command-I)

    • create a Solid Color Layer (Layer –New Fill Layer – Solid Color) and

    set that to black

    • apply the Layer Style Stroke (from the fx-icon at the bottom of the

Layers Panel), select black in the Color-field, and enter an

    appropriate number for Size

    • hide the old layer and create a new blank background

That would maintain editability for the Stroke-width (to edit it

double-click the word »Stroke« below the layer in the Layers Panel).
