Question

How to use a vector to change the shape of a 3D object?

I want to build a very specific 3D object that I can use with Dimension and have been advised to start with Photoshop. I'm very familiar with Photoshop but not with any of it's 3D functionality. I'll do my best to bullet-list what I want to do:

  1. Create a 3D sphere
  2. Cut that sphere in half
  3. Take a logo (could be in any format, eps, png, etc.)
  4. Apply that logo to the flat surface of the cut sphere
  5. Use the logo shapes to extrude / include (bump map?) that flat surface
  6. Import to Dimension for coloring & mocking

This seems to be too specific of a query for Google, so any and all help is VERY much appreciated as I'm trying to accomplish this today.

Hi Dan

Photoshop's modelling capabilities are very limited. I would use a 3D application such as, the free, Blender 3D to achieve your goal. It can export as OBJ to Dimension.

If I am understanding you correctly, it might also be easier to do this in Illustrator. While they haven't done too much with the 3d tools in Illustrator in a long time, it is easy to create a sphere and then map art on it. I think you want something like this:

Nearly! Except I want the art to actually extrude / include the sphere half plane, not simply display on the plane.
