Huge detail difference between original and generative fill

Hi,

Using Photoshop 2024, I am trying to upscale a portrait image I took of my dog to fit my ultrawide 49" LG desktop screen. Although PS is capable of inventing the background, you can clearly notice the vast quality difference in terms of pixels between the original section and the generative fill section.

What is causing this? Is this a limitation of the Generative Fill function, my hardware or some software setting I have to adjust? I already tried upping the DPI of the image, but to no avail.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

Richard

Correct answer Myra Ferguson

The issue is that Generative Fill only outputs images that are 1024 x 1024 px. You can piece together sections to make a higher resolution result. Here's a video where Jesus Ramirez explains the issue and his recommended approach:

BTW,  adorable doggo! 🙂

Thanks, I managed to solve it now!

Knowing that the maximum resolution is 1024x1024 for generative fill helped me solve it by first splitting the image in multiples of 1024 pixels and then only expanding the canvas with 1020 pixels at a time!

Thanks for the compliment on our dog, Pepper. He's a cross-breed of a labrador and a german pointer and we truly adore him.
