I cannot get the cloning to work. My brush wipes out image to look like a chequerboard and does not go onto background image
Hello Marissa, there are many ways to have several times the same subject in an image. There is also a tool called the clone tool, hence the answers here.
If the technique you use is to have two times the image, each on its own layer, slightly offset, you want to add a layer mask to the top layer, and paint in black on the layer mask to hide a given area, that should reveal the lower subject.

Sounds like you are not cloning from the correct layer. Can you post a screen grab showing what you are trying to do and the the layers you are using.

David, that would not cause the brush to expose the transparent chequerboard. It might be that what the OP is seeing is not in fact the transparent chequerboard, but that the OP is using the Pattern Stamp tool....

I am opening from LR to PS then I create layer mask. The brush will create a chequerboard or some times it will erase image but then I cannot get it onto the other image.

I am using the brush tool. I am not clear what to do to blend the image once I have got the brush to take away the image. Do I do command I on the background layer or the layer mask?

I managed to do one but cannot get it to do again. I have been trying for 2 hours now. The brush either paints black, white checks... and when I command I it does not work
