Community Beginner ,

So I have cs5.1 of both applications and I can go from PS to ILLU with all layers intact but the second I try and go backwards photoshop wants to merge everything into one layer....This is essentially a no no in my books, how do I take a illustrator file with all its objects, layrs and nested layers and turn it into a photoshop file?

In Illustrator You have export -> .psd

You can export with layers or flatten

The only way to do that is to export a PSD from Illustrator.

Photoshop doesn't know how to read the Illustrator documents, only rasterize them (without layers, folders, etc.).

Would Smart objects help you?

Photoshop > File > Open as Smart Object... and if you want to edit that object, double click on the layer thumbnail and it will open in Illustrator with all of your layers intact.

But then, depending on what you want to do, this might not help you.

I do the same. Prepare my Illustrator with various layers, then from Photoshop I import "as Smart Object", hides the layers that I don't need in Illustrator and then convert the imported layer in Raster so that I can recycle my illustrator.
Also, if you keep your imported illustrator as Smart Object, the size of your .PSD can become really huge

This wont work correctly if you have 'Use Artboards' ticked on the export.
