iMac Retina 5K 2020 opening Photoshop files as black images or scambled images.

Since updating to v24, Photoshop has been opening files (PSD, JPG, etc.) as either a black image or one where the layers are scrambled and repeated. iMac is updated with all available updates. I don't want to disable the GPU; it's a new computer. It doesn't matter if layers are turned off or text is edited. Zooming in or out doesn't change it unless it is zoomed to a cm or two. But changing the zoom back changes it back to black or scambled. It doesn't happen all the time; maybe 50% of the time. Layers are all there, but the display is messed up.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out. The latest version of Photoshop is 24.2; update Photoshop to the latest version via the Creative Cloud desktop app.

If the update isn't available, try this:

  • Press & hold CMD + OPT + R in the Creative Cloud app to refresh Creative cloud.

If the issue exists, ensure no stale preferences in your Photoshop. Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

  • macOS: In the Finder, hold down the Option key when using the Go menu > Library > Go to Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2023 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2023. old)

These changes will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a fresh install. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

Hi @graphicd30959798 go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check "Disable Native Canvas". That should resolve it specifically for Mac.

It had already been checked. I had even tried unchecking it. No luck.

We had something similar where it looked like previous images were "ghosting" onto the current document. We ended up having to do a clean uninstall (do not keep preferences) and reinstall of PS to resolve.

Update: Updated to 24.3.0 but it still does it. Clean install failed. Figured out a work around, however. I have to zoom out until the correct image appears and the ghosted image disappears. Then I have to click the gray artboard with the Move Tool to deselect the image so that I can zoom back in. But nothing so far has fixed this bug. Attached are the before/after SSs. First one is a ghosted/repeated image from a previously opened file that shows up in place of the current opened document. The second SS is what happens when zoomed out. The bugged image disappears and the correct image is displayed. Then, as I mentioned, if I click outside the image and zoom back to 100%, the ghost is gone. If I don't click the gray background and zoom back to 100%, the ghost remains.

Hi @graphicd30959798 did you check to make sure Preferences/Technology Preview/Disable Native Canvas is checked?
