Question

Image Adjust brightness/contrast not working properly in Photoshop

The Image Adjustments > brightness/contrast setting in the latest version of Photoshop for Mac is washing images out when I increase contrast. Increasing contrast previously darkened images. (This is happening in adjustment layers as well.)  I use this tool frequently, and the new settings don’t allow for the same darkness/richness without the entire image darkening. It’s difficult to get the same effect easily with curves. This seems like an error in the update. Could you please provide any assistance?

Hi @rhr

Thanks for reporting this. To better understand what’s happening, could you please share a screen recording or video of the issue in action? This will help us see exactly how the adjustment is affecting your image. Additionally, it would be helpful to know:

  • Is the issue specific to a particular file or file format (e.g., only happening with JPEGs, PNGs, etc.)?

  • What is the source of these images — are they from a camera, stock site, screenshot, etc.?

  • Are you seeing the same behavior in a brand new Photoshop file?

  • Please also share your system info from Photoshop > Help > System Info... (copy and paste the full details here).

Once we have this information, we’ll be able to take a closer look and assist you further.

Regards,

Srishti
