Image color fade from one color to another

I have a need to transform the butterfly (see attached image) from purple to natural monarch colors (purple in the lower right to natural in the upper left).  I am new to AI and PS (and have both) but don't know how to accomplish this.  Tutorials I've found suggest using adding another layer then fade them together.  However that fades the whole artboard.  I want to fade only the butterfly.  Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.  TIA

I would add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and put a gradient in the layer mask.

A Hue/Saturation adjustment layer set to target just the unwanted colour would be my starting point.

That way the whole frame doesn’t get adjusted.

Then, as Semaphoric wrote, you'll need to add a gradation to the layer mask so that the adjustment only applies to the area you want to change.
