Question

Image motion blur in static photo

I am working on an art proposal. I want part of the Photoshop still image art to include an individual starting in a kneeling, praying position and rising to a standing position. The best way I know how to describe is it MIGHT be a motion blur from kneeling to standing, with standing being a sharp in focus image. There will be a static background. Looking for  suggestions on:

  1. Do I take still images - like with a motor drive - of kneeling to standing?
  2. Do I take video clip  of kneeling to standing?

Then, what Photoshop technique do I use to achieve my end motion result?

If you know of an online tutorial, please send me a link. If you have done something similar, and don’t mind sharing, Id love to hear how you did it.

Any suggestions/advice appreciated.

Thanks

Have a look at Path Blur (from Blur Gallery).  I think of it as one of Photoshops undiscovered secrets.

Yo'd obviously work on a copy of the layer with the blurred layer behind the unblurred layer.  You get a lot of control on curve, direction and amount.  You can have multiple paths.

I would try a longish exposure in the camera for the motion blur, triggering the flash at the beginning and end of the exposure.

If you only wanted the end (standing) to be sharp, look into your camera's menu to find second curtain synch, also often called low-speed synch.

It might be a more fluid motion for a standing model to drop to their knees than to rise. First curtain synch would work for that.
