Question

Image with dark background on black page – how to give the black in the image a lighter hue

Hey there!

I'm working on a book project. Problem as follows:

I have lots of images I want to display on black background. However, some of the images themselves have 100% black backgrounds, so they will appear "borderless" on the black pages of the book (see picture).

I want to give all of the images a lighter value of maximum black – in the way that afterwards, the book page will be 100% black, but the maximum black in the images is e.g. 95% – therefore making it possible to see the border of the images on the black pages.

How can I do this, and how can I do this to all the images consistantly and fast?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Tobi

You can do what Dave suggested with the adjustment layer and raise the black level, but then you can feather the effect with the mask to just affect the edges, so the rest of the image doesn't become flat.

If the budget allows and you have chosen an appropriate paper stock, consider a spot varnish on either the images or the background. I would opt for a flat panel of gloss spot varnish on all the inages.

Hi

You can increase the black level to a dark grey using curves but, like Derek, I would not do that as you will reduce the contrast and also  make visible any low level noise. Changing the page background might be a better option.

Thanks a lot! Your point really makes sense. I think I will go that route.

I'd do this in InDesign as you're creating a book, which presumably will include some text as well as images and folios etc. You could set up an Object Style with say a 1px white border to go around each photograph.

Derek, thanks so much for your answer! Well, I could do a white border around the images, sure, but I would prefer to have them separated only by a difference in the saturation of the black.

Of course I'm designing the book in InDesign. I use Photoshop to prepare the images only.
