Question

Improving 3D workflow

Hello guys, I'll try to make this quick as I guess that the answer will be something like "that's not possible". But here's to trying anyway

I'm currently working on a full weapon retexture (skin) for a game, and what started as a fun little project that was meant to kill an hour or two with the trial version of PS CC has ended up becoming a 70+ hour investment as well as me obviously purchasing the software.

My current workflow looks something like this:

Edit texture in 2D using a UV overlay > save as .tga > switch to my 3D document and reapply the updated texture to the weapon's model.

The question, simply put; is there any way of streamlining the constant manual reapplication of the texture, every time I need to preview an edit (which is extremely often) in 3D? Something like a live preview or some kind of automation within the software?

Many thanks in advance, any advice is appreciated. Cheers!

To be really honest, in my opinion the best way to improve your 3d painting workflow is to switch to more specialist and up-to-date tools such as Substance Painter or 3DCoat. Both also offer PBR viewports, which Photoshop lacks. Both also work together with Photoshop.

Are you able to open the 3D model in Photoshop?

If so - you should be able to go to the material properties - click on diffuse then Edit Texture which will open the material in a psb smart object. You can have that material window open at the same time as the 3D view using Window -Tile as you paint on one it appears on the other. Note if it gets out of sync - save the material close and re-open.

Thanks a lot for the response. To answer your first question, I have the 3D model open in Photoshop and just switch between my main texture document and the 3D document, each time having to click "replace texture" to preview my changes on the 3D model. I tried editing the texture as you suggested and seeing a live update to the texture is exactly what I'm after, however my texture is comprised of over 300 layers and relies heavily on groups and blending modes. The psb smart object flattens the entire image making it impossible to work with. It's a neat feature though and something I wouldn't have tried so thanks!

    Now I am puzzled

I have no problem here with multi-layered textures, including blending modes and further smart objects nested within the texture psb file.  I admit I rarely have 300 layers in a single texture but I wonder if there is something in your particular file that is leading to flattening.

I would be interested in taking a look if you can share a link
