After five years I need to update my PC because of timeissues, loading 200 RAW files from a session is tiresome and 1000 RAW from a sportevent takes at least 1 hour.
Ive decided to go with Ryzen 9900x and 96 Gb of DDR 5, 5200mhz memory, will also have 2x2 tb SSD from WD (gen 4). But I am stuck choosing a graphiccard - I am considering a GeForce RTX 3060 12GB Windforce. Is that enough or should I choose someting else?
An RTX 3060 can basically handle anything you throw at it in Photoshop and Lightroom. I have one machine with a 3060 and one with a 4060 Ti. They are both rock solid and perform splendidly. The higher number models will be faster in some respects, but for Photoshop it's not worth the extra cost.
I don't think it has any particular impact on the import times, though. If you have slow imports of raw files you have a different problem. Are you using a good card reader with a fast interface? USB 3 is a lot faster than USB 2. Also, SD cards come with different speed ratings.
Just between you and me, I'd go Intel instead of AMD. AMD is in the business of gaming. That's their market and their priorities. Of the problems reported here in the forum, a disproportionately high amount is AMD systems.
You know how this works. If an Intel CPU gets two points below AMD in some gaming benchmark test, then Intel suddenly has "huge problems". This is just how the computer geeks think.
For the rest of us, who use our machines to get actual work done, some of us for a living, stability and reliability is the thing that matters.
I'm sure AMD has great specs for gaming, but Ryzen is a recurrent name in problem reports here. Things like generally bad performance, inexplicable crashing, BSOD and so on. Not, mind you, that it happens to everyone, but when it does, it's most often Ryzen. That's just statistics.
