Is it possible to resize in a non uniform way in PS?

Let's say I have an image of a chessboard and I want to stretch it vertically so it's height is double it's width. But I want to do it in a non-uniform way. I want the top squares to remain square, then the next row of squares to be slightly wider, the next even wider and so on. Some kind of gradual resize, if you will, so I can have the least distortion on top and the most at the bottom. Is that a thing in PS? (A chessboard is just an example, I'm actually trying to resize a part of an image but make it unnoticeable)

Interesting idea, like a "gradient map" for scaling. I can see uses for that.

Content aware scale can do non linear scaling which might suit your purpose (and you can protect specific areas from scaling with an alpha channel should you wish)

Are any of the examples below what you’re after? They were all done in Photoshop, using different forms of the Transform and Warp commands.
