Is there a way to disable automatic placing of drag-and-drop files?

When I drag a file, such as a PSD or whatever into the canvas area, Photoshop automatically "places" that document in the open document.

Is there a way to have Photoshop not place anything at all and just open the document in a new tab?

I hate this feature and I want to turn it off.

Any help greatly appreciated.

That is correct, Photoshop naturally places a drag-n-drop image into the document if you drag it onto the open document canvas. It is honouring what you "told it to do".

If you drag the document to the right of the open tabbed document windows, it opens as a separate document (in the blank document "tab" area).

If you don't have tabbed windows set in prefs, then drag the document into Photoshop anywhere except into a floating document window and it will open as a separate document.

In other words, the document is either placed or opened, depending on where you drop it.

Hi @futuremotion6798557 it sounds like you have a few responses above. If you really want to persue this you can always file an Idea in the forum and give feedback on what action or setting you want to add. The more upvotes it gets the more visibility it will have.

Without sounding condescending, I know that already, that's what I've been doing. I was just wondering if there is a setting to disable that. I almost never want to "place" a file in my open document.

Control + Z will undo (But you probably know that already).

On macOS drag the file onto the Photoshop icon in the Dock and a new document will be created.

On Windows drag the file onto the Photoshop shortcut if it's on your desktop or into the Photoshop interface outside the present document area like on the area just below the menus and a new document will be created.
