Question

jpeg to raw

I have been a photoshop user for over 20 years. Suddenly today I cannot open a jpeg as a raw file. I used to select "RAW" but now have to select "Photoshop RAW". After that it asks for the file dimensions which I insert  but still will not accept the file. Anybody else having this problem?

Using Ctrl/Cmd + R in Adobe Bridge will also open a supported file type in ACR.

Thank you for the info. I reinstalled Camera Raw and all is well. 🙂

It sounds like Photoshop might be defaulting to the wrong "Photoshop RAW" format instead of opening the file in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), which is what you want for JPEG images. This can sometimes happen if settings or preferences get reset or if there’s an update. Here are some steps to try and troubleshoot:

    1. Reset Preferences:

      • Go to Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw and ensure that JPEGs are set to open in Camera Raw if desired.
      • If you’d like to reset Photoshop preferences entirely (to clear out any unusual behavior), go to Edit > Preferences > General and select Reset Preferences on Quit. Restart Photoshop afterward.
    2. Set JPEGs to Open in Camera Raw:

      • Go to File Handling in Preferences, then look under Camera Raw Preferences.
      • Set JPEG to "Automatically open all supported JPEGs" or "Automatically open JPEGs with settings" to force JPEG files to open directly in Adobe Camera Raw.
    3. Open in ACR Manually:

      • If the issue persists, you can try opening the JPEG through File > Open As and select Camera Raw (rather than Photoshop Raw).
      • Alternatively, use File > Open in Camera Raw if available.

If the problem continues after trying these steps, reinstalling Adobe Camera Raw or updating Photoshop might help reset the configuration that opens files in ACR.

I create what you see & hear.

@maksh95923910 is this ai-generated? All this has already been covered and this post didn't add anything.

What version of Photoshop and operating system are you using?

You want to select Camera Raw not Photoshop Raw, which is different file format not related to Camera Raw

Opening jpegs in the Camera Raw processor is set in Camera Raw Preferences.

The default option is "Open jpegs with settings", rather cryptic, but what it means is that if a jpeg contains ACR metadata, it will open in ACR. If not, it opens directly into Photoshop.

The other options are "open all jpegs" and "disable jpeg support".

Just to be clear, opening in ACR doesn't make it a raw file. It's still a jpeg. The advantage is that you avoid repeated resaves, which will quickly degrade a jpeg.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
