Question

Keep old version's preferences after new version of Photoshop

I just installed PS 2020 and I'm really sad to see I have redo my customisation completely again. I wish there was a way to keep preferences when a new version is out. Not just the preference panel but also things like actions, layout, shortcuts, custom tools, etc. I know how to do it manually but it's such a pain each time, I'll keep using 2019 for some time just because of this.

Sahil is correct - when you upgrade it give you the option to port over your existing preferences. The only way this would not work is if you completely uninstall 2019 first and remove the preferences (it gives you an option to retain on uninstall).

Sorry for the delay. I just tried the export / import steps, I get the message it was imported successfully but even after rebooting PS, it didn't really apply. I tried a second time and it said they were already there but I still have the default settings.

Is there a way to have 2019 and 2020 running at the same time, so I could compare the settings?

Yes its not recommended for working, but you can have them open to compare.

Hi there,

When you update an app through the Creative Cloud Desktop applciation, it gives you an option to keep the old app's preferences.

However, you may try the steps mentioned here to migrate your settings: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/photoshop/using/preset-migration.html

Regards,
Sahil

I just had Install in the creative cloud desktop. I just desinstalled it and tried again, still no question about the presets. The older version was open though.

Tried a third time, with 2019 closed, still never asks the question. I remember having it when going from 2018 to 2019.
