Please explain what you actually want to achieve. 

Paths can be included in Actions and would therefore seem a more meaningful choice for automation than Lasso-Selections.

It is possible. But it's harder than you might expect.

As pfaffenbichler said, you do it by adding paths (bezier curves) to the document, then selecting that path and use its coordinates to direct your gradient
