Everytime I try to use the lasso tool I get the following error message: "Warning: No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible."  I can't find any post discussing this.

Are there pixels in that area in photoshop targeted layer that can be selected that have an opacity greater than 50%. Is the lasso tool being feathered? What is your lasso selection mode? Its complex at time seems strange.

The message does not state there was no selection made it just states there are no pixels that have an opacity grater than 50% that can be outlined with marching ants.

Try resetting the tool

To me what seems strange is the Lasso tool will set a select for empty areas and At time warn me that no pixels are selected and the lassoed area has a sold outline while the warning is being displayed where pixels should have been selected.

When I dimissed the error all is deselected
