I use the lasso tool a lot, regular lasso, not magnetic. When I draw a lasso and don't like it I usually just click outside of it and what I drew is gone and I can start again. However, in the last two days I've found that once I draw a lasso I can only remove it if I select another tool (like the marquee tool). I have uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop, to no avail. What has happened, and how do I get back the ability to simply click out of what I drew?

Make sure New Selection is enabled in the tool options bar before drawing out a selection.

Above suggestion should work. Note that you can deselect using shortcut Ctrl + D. New selection will always start new selection deselecting previous one.

If you want ability to add, substract or intersect with existing selection use icons in the Tool options bar and shortcut to deselect when necessary.
