layer and its content

this is a two part question.  i am a VERY beginner - so please be simple if you can with your answer.

1.  the book i have says that when i use some tools - they will create layers for me (verses other methods for creating new layers).  one of those ways was with drawing a shape.  i am assuming this included the rectangle tool - but when i pick it - it does not create a new layer like my book says it should.  and in addition to that -

2.  the shape gets created on my currently active layer.  i've tried getting rid of the rectangle - but my entire layers gets deleted.  so how do i get rid of it w/o deleting my layer?

    Hi

    These are the tools that will create a new layer, they're called the shape tools, the Type Tool is another that will create a new layer

    What you are using is the Selection Tools

    When you make a selection with the selections tools, just hit CTRL + D on the keyboard to deselect
