Question

Layer Masks won't let me add a texture.

I'm having a hard time adding a texture into my layer mask. I've followed the ordinary procedure of clicking Option then the layer mask itself, but when I do that the layer mask just seems to go into the layer with the selection highlighted. When I try to add a texture in the layer mask, nothing happens unless I leave the layer mask selection.

Are you just pasting in an texture image once you have Alt+clicked the mask?

I have tried this myself and the first time I did run into a problem where it didn't do anything, but I've tried it 4 times since and it works every time 😂 The only other thing I can suggest is try a new image and see if it works. Perhaps if others of us have this problem we ought to flag it as a bug?

My method was:

  • Type text.
  • Copy my desired texture.
  • Click Make New mask in the Layers Panel.
  • Paste the texture image.
  • Click back on the Layer thumbnail.

The other way I tried was the same as above but first I drew a selection around my text before making the mask and copying in my texture.

(Not the best bit of work I've produced, but here's a screenshot.)

Thank you so much, I just had a mental lapse I guess, the problem was that I didn't press ctrl + a to copy the whole texture.

Oh I'm glad you sorted it out. I'll confess I ahd to go in search of the answer myself - not added texture ot a mask for a while!

I would prefer a Smart Object- (or Pattern Layer-) approach to maintain better editability (either as the basis of a Clipping Group or as a Knockout).

But if the texture will not be transformed repeatedly the advantage would not really be relevant.

Please explain what you are actually trying to do.

In the second screenshot the Layer Mask appears to be active – what are you trying from this point on? Insert an image, apply a Filter, …?

I was trying to add a texture I had in another slide in the text but for some reason it wasn't pasting. Turns out I just needed to press Crtl + A to copy the whole document of the texture; initially I was just pressing ctrl + c for the texture then trying to ctrl + v it into the layer mask.
