Layer Style slider not working

I've been doing some tutorials for Photoshop and the thing that I was working on was on correcting exposure. When I try to go to layer style I move the underlying slider in any direction and nothing is happening. I tried googling and reset everything and restarted Photoshop but nothing has worked. I've attached a screenshot for reference

It's likely the colors/luminosity values you're trying to manipulate in your file aren't there. You're trying to affect light areas of an image and most of your image is mid to dark.

Looks like Preview is not checked in the Layer Style dialog

Figured it out but you are right also. There was barely anything to manipulate.
