MacBook Pro 14 inch M1 Max chip

32 GB memory

Ventura 13.5 software

Photoshop 24.7.0

PROBLEM:

After I launch a photo and want to create a new layer, once the changes are made on this new layer, the “Command>Delete” function no longer works, so I am unable to use the brush to selectively paint over the image. It simply freezes.

I have mirrored all the preferences I have on another computer to this one, but the problem only persists on the MBP.

Until today, I have always used this technique whether I am using Levels. Curves, etc.

The “Command>Delete” works on all other functions including sending a PS file to the trash.

Are you filling mask with black using Command + Delete? Please explain further how you use Cmd+Delete shortcut.

If Cmd+Delete is not filling your layer with the Background swatch in Photoshop, the first thing to do is to reset the foreground and background swatches by typing "D" or using the widget in the Tools panel.

If it still doesn't work, it's possible you will have to reset preferences. If you do it manually by renaming the preferences file, you can restore the old file if it doesn't solve your issue. Backup preferences first. Details here:

The Command + Delete combination has always allowed me to return the document to it's orginal form. At that point I was able to use the brush tool and apply the new layer to areas I select (specific areas and not the entire image.)  Then I can simply Flatten Image and save the new file with the updated changes. Do I make sense? TIA

I deleted the version of PS 27 from my computer and uploaded a fresh copy. Everything works now, so thanks for your attention : )
