Question

Less max RAM available in Photoshop CC and CS6 than is usable in Windows 10

I have 16 GB of RAM installed on my Windows 10 64-bit and I use Photoshop CC 64-bit.

Windows 10 sees all 16 GB of RAM as both installed and usable (and so it shows in Windows' Task Manager).

But in my Photoshop CC (and I had the same issue in my Photoshop CS6) maximum of ~10,5 GB of RAM can be used. The other 4,5 GB of RAM is missing.

Is it supposed to be that way? Or is it a bug? And how can I solve it so I get access to my entire 16 GB of RAM?

Alright, I have found a solution for my problem.

It's under this link:

Error while accessing performance preferences - 'An integer between 96 and 8 is required.'

Problem solved.

Ah, OK. I thought about that, but it was fixed a couple of Photoshop versions ago.

All you need to do is update Photoshop - don't attempt the registry edits that were the workaround back then.

Thanks for advice. However for some reason after upgrading to 19.1.5+ version it didn't solve the problem for me. I still could only use 10,5 GB of RAM. But it may just be my issue. Anyway, the workaround solution worked.

OK, but if a future PS update fixes it, you need to undo the registry edit.

It was a fairly common problem back then - relatively speaking. It was still a small proportion of users. But you're the first one I've heard of post Photoshop 19.1.5. So there must be something particular going on with your system.

Memory allocation in Photoshop should never be 100%. That will choke the rest of the system.

You set this in Preferences > Performance. The default is 70%, which is about 10 GB. You could increase it a bit, up to say 12 or so, but never all the way up.

Your scratch disk will take care of temporary working storage beyond RAM. Your current setting should work splendidly as it is.

I'm afraid you misunderstood me here.

16 GB of RAM is 100% for my PC.

But Photoshop shows 10,5 GB to be 100% and doesn't allow to use more.

So I would like to use ~14 GB of RAM out of that 16 GB installed on PC. But I don't know where that remaining 4,5 of GB went.
