Just installed PS 2020 and the lighting effect filter doesn't work anymore. The images are 8 bits and RGB, but when you try to apply the filter the sole slider working is the Ambience one. It disables the filter even on already-applied filters.
It worked only once, when I firs started up the program. So I re-installed it and it only works once.
Any idea?

It sound like you preferences or tool settings may have been corrupted try resetting your PS 2020 tools and preferences. I see many sliders and presets in PS 2020. Note PS icon has rounder edges and text is white this is a 2020 grab.

Thanks for the answer.
I feel you are right, I installed PS 2020 on my Mac Pro and the filter works nicely. So it must be a problem tied to my other machine (iMac). Will try to reset tools and preferences.

Hi Mario,
Did you find a workable solution ?
I tried like JJMack said to reset tools and preference, but I go back with the same issue. Works once, and then only the ambiant setting is making a difference...

Nope. It works just fine on my 2013 mac pro but it refuses to work on my 2017 imac. I feel it is tied to the startup disk. On my imac I have an external SSD disk as system disk, while on the mac pro I have an internal SSD.
This is still unsolved for me.

Hey Mario,
Changing the performance setting to legacy in photoshop did the trick for me. It's not ideal I guess, but until they fixed the issue in an upcomming update I guess it's fine this way 🙂

I did try the Legacy Compositing trick, and it didn't work. Also after the last PS update it doesn't work anymore also on my Mac Pro. I had to reinstall a older version of PS in order to continue my work... this is sad.

I had what looks like a similar issue on my iMac. I just fixed it with the "reset preferences on quit" button.

I can confirm that the "reset preferences on quit" works. Unfortunately it is short lived, since after a while the issue comes up again and you have to quit again. At least I don't have to use PS 2019 to do my lighting effects.

Good luck! I hadn't tried again after reporting my initial success. And when I did go back after reading your comment, I did have the lighting controls, but the light source seemed to start out from the back, so that the image was not illuminated. I spun it around to illuminate from the front, and that worked. I reset my preferences, and the problem did not recur. At least initially.
I had seen this problem earlier, but after then I went through a period where there were no light-source controls at all, even if I tried to add a new source. That was fixed by resetting preferences, and so far that problem hasn't come back.

I have been researching this as I am teaching a class and am having the problems reported here with a 'blacked-out' screen or area that I'm trying to light. I've tried the suggestions but still having issues. I'm on a PC, and my class is taught in a high-end PC lab...so big problems here. Adobe needs to fix this as this is a key tool.
With students, I can't go to every individual computer and walk them through adjusting preferences...there isn't time for that in this class.

Photoshop should work on your high end PC machines. If everything is installed and updated properly. Make sure all Windows Updated are installed and all the installed system Device drivers are the latest one for you devices. Particularly for your graphics display Adapter. Make sure the machines does not also have an integrated GPU that is enabled for use by Photoshop. Make sure your motherboard's firmware BIOS is up to date. Install Photoshop's updates.
Adobe Photoshop has a problem running on machines that have more the one model GPU available for use. Photoshop Image windows often are blank or black when there are different GPU available for use. troubleshoot gpu graphics card

Lee Anne you are not dealing with Adobe here this is an Adobe users forum web site. We are users of Adobe software like you. Adobe is not going to install Photoshop on your machines and they will not update other software on your machines.
If there are bugs in Photoshop that is causing the problem you have Adobe may fix the problem if you report them to Adobe on their feedback web site. That is where you should report Photoshop problems. That site is photoshop family
IMO you need to deal with your higher education installation's IT department and have them fix the Photoshop installations problems on their PC machines.

Hello, are you working in a localized version of Photoshop? And in Ps 21.0.3?
