Line drawing issues

Community Beginner ,

So I haven't used ps in a good 7 years. I need to use it for drawing a handful of lines on an image. I swear I thought you could slap a line in then ctrl left click and move the end of the line where you want it.... it is not doing that.... did they change the control or something?

The Line tool is one of the shape tools. Confirm that the mode in the options bar is Shape.

  • You can format it in the Properties panel and options bar.
  • To move it, use the Path Selection tool "A" (black arrow).
  • To resize it, use the Direct Selection tool "A" (white arrow), select only one of the anchor points, and drag it.

You replied to two other posts that addressed the Pen tool, but not to this one, which addresses the Line tool. Does it answer your question?

A lot of digital artists and illustrators used stroke paths for critical line work.  Thery make a rough sketch, and follow the line with the pen tool.  Then, after carefully editing the path, just as you describe, they stroke the path with a hard round brush preset

If you check Simulate Pressure, and use a brush preset that has Size jitter set to Pressure, you can stroke the path so that it tappers at each end

I think I more or less understood, but I shamefully jumped in and answered before 'fully' reading your post.  My advice about using stroked workpaths to get highly controlled linework stands, and is something you could usefully add to your Photoshop Tips & Tricks box in a corner of your mind.  It really is an incredibly useful tool.

You might have beeen thinking of the Ruler tool regards moving one end of the line, because the Line tool doesn't do that straight off the bat, so to speak.  Having created a line, you can move it without changing length or angle by holding down Ctrl.  To what you asked about you need to enter Free Transform (Ctrl T).

You don't need a modifier key to move one end of the ruler line. just click and drag the cross hairs

Still possible when using Pen tool. While Pen tool is active press and hold Ctrl what will temporary switch to Direct Selection tool.
