How can I produce a simple line drawing from a photo in Photoshop?

I expect an AI model can be trained to trace images to line drawings (or has already) but for the time being you may need to do manual tracing yourself (paint on a new layer and then hide the original layer).

Depending on the output needs Illustrator might offer benefits compared to Photoshop, though.

2. Upload your image.

3.. Choose simple or complex line drawings.

Hi!

There are a couple of 3rd party programs that I have used and had really good results in creating a pencil or pen and ink type line drawing, and they are both from Akvis -- Akvis Artwork, and Akvis Sketch. Here is my dog done with Akvis Sketch: the Second one is Akvis Artwork in Pen and Ink, and the third is also Akvis Artwork using a method called Comics.

You need to play with them a little bit to get a feel for how the filters work, but you can get some really good results. And once you create a look you really like, you can save it as a preset, to use over and over again.

They have some really good examples on the home page, and a 10-day free trial. (And they are fun to play with!)

Not exactly what you're looking for, but it might help.

I produced this using Select > Subject (applying a Layer Mask) then Filter > Stylise > Find Edges. Converted it to Grayscale then back to RGB.

Thanks for that but I've got that so far and then brighness and contrast etc, all helps but not quite there.

Along with Trevor's question above, what type of line drawing are you trying to create--pencil style line? Pen and Ink type line?

Hi, thanks for the reply, this is mostly for people and animal images. It's for my wife to use for her artwork. Something like the examples here, (not my photos).
